چکیده

Lignin, a phenolic polymer abundant in cell walls of certain cell types, has given challenges to scientists that study its structure or biosynthesis. In plants lignified tissues are distributed between other, non-lignified tissues. Characterisation of native lignin in the cell wall has been difficult due to the highly cross-linked nature of the wall components. Model systems, like plant tissue cultures with tracheary element differentiation or extracellular lignin formation, have provided useful information related to lignin structure and several aspects of lignin formation. For example, many enzyme activities in phenylpropanoid pathway have been first identified in tissue cultures. This review focuses on studies where the use of plant tissue cultures has been advantageous in structural and biosynthesis studies of lignin, and discusses the validity of tissue cultures as models for lignin biosynthesis.

A genomics approach to deciphering lignin biosynthesis in switchgrass.

It is necessary to overcome recalcitrance of the biomass to saccharification (sugar release) to make switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) economically viable as a feedstock for liquid biofuels. Lignin content correlates negatively with sugar release efficiency in switchgrass, but selecting the right gene candidates for engineering lignin biosynthesis in this tetraploid outcrossing species is not stra...

EjODO1, a MYB Transcription Factor, Regulating Lignin Biosynthesis in Developing Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) Fruit

Lignin is important for plant secondary cell wall formation and participates in resistance to various biotic and abiotic stresses. Loquat undergoes lignification not only in vegetative tissues but also in flesh of postharvest fruit, which adversely affects consumer acceptance. Thus, researches on lignin biosynthesis and regulation are important to understand loquat fruit lignification. In loqua...

Effects of fungal elicitor on lignin biosynthesis in cell suspension cultures of soybean.

Soybean (Glycine max L.) cells cultured in B5 medium produce extremely low amounts of lignin. However, modification in the growth medium, by lowering the concentration of NO(-) (3) and PO(2-) (4), results in the lignification of these cells without affecting levels of cell wall-esterified 4-coumaric and ferulic acid. The production of an extracellular, macromolecular complex by the cultured soy...

Roles of lignin biosynthesis and regulatory genes in plant development

Lignin is an important factor affecting agricultural traits, biofuel production, and the pulping industry. Most lignin biosynthesis genes and their regulatory genes are expressed mainly in the vascular bundles of stems and leaves, preferentially in tissues undergoing lignification. Other genes are poorly expressed during normal stages of development, but are strongly induced by abiotic or bioti...
